Deadline is reporting that Smulders is close to being cast in the epic superhero movie The Avengers as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Maria Hill.
The casting news comes after Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in the Marvel universe, dropped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and spill the news that he would get a female sidekick in Joss Whedon's upcoming Avengers. Now, the role could be Smulders, who auditioned for the role Friday, within the week.
It wouldn't be the first time Smulders came close to joining the world of superheroes. She was a candidate for Wonder Woman when Whedon was working on that film project (which never left the ground).
So who exactly is Maria Hill? According to Wikipedia, Maria Hill was the former Director of the planetary defense/intelligence service S.H.I.E.L.D. and takes Fury's role after he's forced into hiding.
Apparently this news is disappointing for fan who were hoping Smulders would be cast as the Wasp but like EW pointed out, Whedon could take the character in an interesting direction.
Smulders apparently beat out Morena Baccarin (ABC's V), Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield), and Mary Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) for the role.
Film will be premiered on 5th May 2012.
